Car insurance in Germany

No vehicle is registered in Germany without insurance. We explain the types of cover and what to watch for, and pass you to our partner for the comparison itself.

Third-party liability (Haftpflicht)

Required by law and a precondition for registration. It pays for damage you cause to others but nothing on your own vehicle. Without the confirmation number (eVB) the registration office will not issue plates.

Partial and fully comprehensive

Teilkasko covers theft, glass, animal collisions, storm, hail and fire. Vollkasko adds damage you cause yourself and vandalism. Comprehensive usually pays off on younger used cars; on older ones partial cover is often enough.

No-claims class

The longer you drive without a claim, the lower the premium. The class belongs to the driver rather than the car, so it moves with you when you change vehicles and can sometimes be transferred within a family.

Passenger accident cover

Pays out for injuries to the driver and passengers regardless of who caused the accident. Worth considering when you regularly carry people, for instance in transfer or family vehicles.

Breakdown cover

Towing, jump starts, a replacement car and repatriation from abroad. Added to the policy it is usually cheaper than a standalone membership, particularly if you drive elsewhere in Europe.

Compare tariffs

The comparison runs on Tarifcheck, an independent comparison service. You enter the vehicle and driver details and see offers from several insurers side by side.
